Holiday Crafts to Entertain and Enlighten Your Child

With school out for the holidays, you are bound to encounter a few children who claim to be bored, or need some encouragement to entertain themselves without a screen. Cozy winter days with hours to spare are a great time to pull out the crafting supplies and make something together. Check out these ideas for fun holiday activities your kids are sure to enjoy:

Baking and Experimenting

Kids love to get busy in the kitchen, whether it is baking cookies for neighbor gifts or helping with the holiday meal. Why not throw in a little science? Bake several versions of the same cookie or cupcake recipe, each time leaving out one of the main ingredients. Record results in taste, sight and texture and then decide which ingredients are actually necessary for a successful final product. You may be surprised at the outcome. Be sure to bake a few control batches to enjoy and share.

Cutting Snowflakes

Cutting snowflakes is timeless, yet magical. Once children learn the basics of folding and where to cut, this activity can go on for hours. A simple web search will reveal several designs or templates that can be used to create amazing patterns. Try using sheets of vellum for thinner, easier to cut snowflakes and a stunning effect.

Making Ice Lanterns

Gather plastic containers in a variety of sizes and several small plastic kid-sized drinking cups. Fill the drinking cups with water and place inside a larger plastic container. Add water to the container, stopping a little below the rim of the drinking cup. Add berries or evergreen branches to the larger container and then freeze or set outdoors overnight if temperatures are below freezing. When frozen, dip the outer container in warm water to loosen and remove the inner cup. Place a battery-powered tea light or candle in the open center for a beautiful display.
