How to Identify a Gifted Student

While there are many students that are talented and bright, the term gifted is reserved for those who think in unique ways that set them apart from most other children. There are several characteristics used to determine if a child is a gifted learner or not.

Thinks Independently and Creatively

While most students need to be taught concepts and how to apply them, a gifted learner can often see the end from the beginning and requires little instruction or intervention. They are often self-taught learners and pick up things quickly, resulting in the ability to learn new concepts rapidly and move through curriculum more efficiently than other students. These students are also often more creative and have an original sense of humor as well as other expressions.

Good Memorization Skills

Gifted children can often memorize things quickly and enjoy this task. This is especially applicable in subjects that greatly interest the child. Their quick memorization skills are also increased by their ability to deeply understand and internalize information.

Visual Perception

Gifted students are also very good at understanding spatial relationships and how they interact with each other. This can contribute to their ability to create unique artwork and other interesting expressions. These learners also often have a bright imagination that they use to experiment with different ideas.

Advanced Language Skills

Gifted students generally have a highly developed vocabulary and pick up new words and phrases easily. They use appropriate grammar naturally and often speak in long, complex sentences. These students are also able to understand more words and thus able to follow multiple directions from a young age.

If you think that your child may be gifted, it’s important to find the correct learning environment to support their needs. While traditional classrooms may be sufficient for the majority of students, gifted learners often excel in schools that are specifically designed for them and provide the type of learning experiences that will keep them stimulated and progressing. Talk to a school counselor today to have your child tested and determine the best path for them on their educational journey.
