When your kids get home from a long day at school, the last thing they look forward to working on is their homework. Doing homework doesn’t have to be a terrible experience for children, however. It is possible to make homework a more fun experience for all family members involved! Give the following ideas a try to help make the act of doing homework more enjoyable.
- Set up a great workspace for the kids. Not only will having a set spot for after-school work help with focus, but a personalized space and supplies they like will make the kids want to be there. For younger kids, displaying their art will boost creativity, while older kids may enjoy a bigger desk space and teen hangout room.
- Stay organized with different boards. Use whiteboards, corkboards, and chalkboards to organize assignments, pass on messages, and cross of tasks.
- Reward your kids with a system of your choice. One idea is to give your kids tickets for completed assignments, and have a prize available when he or she accumulates enough tickets. Stickers and other simple rewards can also help to motivate completion of tasks.
- Earn tech time based on homework assignments completed. If your kids love the iPad, TV, or other electronic devices, rewarding the completion of homework with screen time may be a great motivator.
- Consider kicking off homework time with a brain game, like a puzzle, Sudoku, or a round of Go Fish based on number and math skills. These kinds of games get the kids’ brains going in a way they will find fun and exciting.
- Sometimes a physical break is necessary to break up homework time. Try a dance party, freeze tag, or jumping jacks to reward and keep the brain pumping.
