Many children are smart and capable of earning top marks on tests and assignments. However, truly gifted learners may stand out from their peers in a number of ways. Giftedness comes in many forms, but if any of the following seems to describe your child, they may be more than just smart.
Specific Academic Giftedness
Some students perform at grade level in most subjects but may exhibit a high level of achievement in a particular domain, such as mathematics, science or writing, or with a specific subset of academic skill, such as memorization or analogous thinking. Students with exceptional academic ability may:

General Intellectual Giftedness
Other gifted students posses more general intellectual ability. They may have strong critical thinking skills and may quickly grasp overarching concepts and relationships between elements. These students may:

- Demonstrate an inquisitive nature and strong observational skills
- Process information deeply and in complex ways
- Intuitively identify key concepts and relationships
- Demonstrate an advanced vocabulary
Creative Giftedness
Some students are innovative, outside-the-box thinkers who enjoy experimentation and testing limits. Depending on the type of teachers they have experienced, their grades may not reflect their intellect and they may even be viewed as a behavioral problem. However, these students often flourish in the right environment. They often:
- Compose multiple solutions for a single problem
- Invent new ways to utilize tools and materials
- Improvise in play, on assignments and with hands-on projects
- Entertain others with their quick sense of humor
- Enjoy standing out from the crowd
Students can also exhibit giftedness in athletics, visual and performing arts, leadership, social skills, and other areas. Children who are intellectually gifted need special educational services to make the most of their unique minds.
