Gifted children work hard in school, and winter break is often a welcome time for relaxation. While kids do need time off just to be kids, completely neglecting to take part in any meaningful activities over break can make the transition back to school an unpleasant hurdle. To avoid this situation, consider undertaking some of the following endeavors.
Independent Learning
Encourage your child to complete a research project with a fun topic or medium that he or she would not normally use in school. For example, your child could:
- Write and illustrate a biography of his or her favorite famous figure.
- Paint a picture of a historical event.
- Make a movie about the planets.
Take a Field Trip
There are many fun ways to get out of the house for family time that double as enriching activities. Some of your family field trip destinations could include:
- The zoo. See all of your favorite animals and discover fascinating new ones. This is a good opportunity to talk with your child about conservation and the environment.
- From automobiles to art, there is a museum for nearly any interest, and there is sure to be one that your child will find enthralling.
- National Parks. Hikes are a great way for everyone to burn off some energy. Even if the weather is poor, many parks still have visitor centers so your child can learn more about the parks’ flora and fauna.
Give Back
The holidays surrounding winter break sometimes lead to excessive consumption. You can help your child give back to the community by encouraging him or her to:
- Spend time volunteering.
- Donate any unused possessions.
- Find fun ways to thank friends and family members for gifts.
By taking the time to plan a few activities, you can help your child stay intellectually stimulated over winter break. This will make the transition back to school go much more smoothly, and you and your child will fondly enjoy the memories you create together.
