While it may be difficult for most children to adjust to being back in school after a long summer or holiday break, gifted students sometimes have an especially hard time changing routines and habits. Here are some tips to guide you in helping your gifted student get back into the swing of the new 2016 school year with ease.
- Get yourself up earlier. While you may be worried about your children’s wake-up times, have yours adjusted to the holiday schedule as well? The last thing your child needs is for you to be late and stressed when helping them get ready for the day. Set your alarm early enough that you can be ready and calm when it comes time to get them out the door for school.
- Prepare the night before. Pack lunches, do homework, set out clothes, shower and prepare as much as possible the night before. This will drastically cut down on last minute stressors like a lost shoe or missing papers.
- Eat breakfast together. This time can provide the perfect calming atmosphere to prepare your child to handle an entire day of dealing with peers, teachers and schoolwork. Use these moments to encourage and provide guidance on how to handle the issues they may face during the day.
- Create routines. Being organized in the places where things are put as well as the patterns you follow to get ready will make it easier for your child to be independent in the morning. Gifted children are often highly capable of getting themselves ready as long as you show them a pattern for doing so ahead of time.
As you prepare for a new school year with your child, follow these guidelines for an easy adjustment. The more thought and preparation you put into your morning routine, the more peaceful and calm it will be for you as well as the rest of your family.
