If your child is gifted, it may be a bit overwhelming to understand at first. You child may be a bit different than the other kids. You want to do what is best for your child. You want them to have the best life that they can, and that means that you need to find ways to support them. You can support a gifted child by finding ways to challenge them, considering their emotional needs and respecting them.

Challenge

If your child is gifted, that means that they have an above average intelligence. You need to challenge them so that they can be motivated to continue to learn. Find ways to connect their interests to school. In order to properly do this you need to know what interests you child, and then take an active role in helping them continue that interest. If possible, you could introduce them to a family member or friend who has a career or hobby in their area of interest.

Emotion

Gifted children can be susceptible to social-emotional sensitivities. They may become:

  • Anxious
  • A perfectionist
  • Stressed
  • Ostracized

You can help alleviate these issues by remembering that just because your child is gifted in one area, does not mean they are gifted in every area. Work with them in areas that they struggle. There is no right way to raise child because every child is different no matter if they are gifted or not.

Respect

Most importantly, you have to show your child respect. This can mean a lot of things. It can mean being proud of their uniqueness, listening to their opinions, helping them explore their ideas and teaching them that their dreams can become reality. You need to show them that they are loved.

Gifted Children

There are a lot of materials and resources available to parents with gifted children. Make sure to keep in mind that your situation is unlike any others because your child is unique. You have to do what is best for them. Your process may not be like the other parents at your school or the parents of gifted children, but if you remember that you need to challenge, protect and respect your kids, you will be on the right path.
