With the school year now in full swing, your child may be feeling overwhelmed with the sheer volume of activities, homework, school events, and relationships she has to manage. While adults are better at expressing feelings and emotions, children still tend to have trouble identifying and communicating their specific emotions. Your child may be experiencing stress or even anxiety stemming from these pressures, so take time to note any changes in her mood or state of being. If you note she is having trouble sleeping, appetite change, withdrawal from social situations, moodiness, or avoidance of school, these can be indicators of anxiety.
As a parent, expressing support, encouraging communication, and providing opportunities for relaxation can all help support your child during this time. Educators are also working to provide in-classroom support through research-based curriculum. By practicing stress-reducing techniques for prevention and wellness, children can learn the tools they need to manage stress or anxiety.
