While some students can rocket their way through a public school system and come out on top academically, many students benefit from a less traditional approach. Some children who are gifted academically find the standard public school education to be too distracting and will easily lose sight of priorities. Here are some things to consider when deciding whether or not your child will benefit from a gifted education.
Independent Learning
Gifted schools and private academies typically offer a much lower student to teacher ratio than their public counter parts. This allows the instructors to be able to discover the unique talents and skills of your child, and approach their education in a more personalized way. Children at gifted academies are able to receive a more independent education that is catered to how they learn individually, and will thus help them excel even more over time.
Field Trips
Many gifted academies offer far more field trips and day adventures to museums. Hands on learning outside the classroom helps your child develop the skills and perspective to interact with the world outside of school and home. Heading out into the wilderness and learning about the world we live in will give your child a deeper appreciation of nature and a respect for animals and the environment. Service learning field trips are also common at gifted schools, and help foster humility, empathy and respect for other communities.
After School
Stimulating after school programs are available in which your child can get a handle on a specific skill in which he or she is interested. Whether it be learning a new sport, studying astronomy or practicing a new instrument, extracurricular activities are an extremely important factor in your child’s development.
Many gifted students benefit from a specialized education outside of the public school system. Talk to your child and seek out a gifted testing program to evaluate whether this is an option for your family.
