Why to Consider Sending Your Kids to a Gifted School | Oak Crest Academy

Doubtless, you want what is best for your child. Especially if your son or daughter shows early signs of talent and is gifted academically, you want to push them to reach their full potential. It is too easy for children of any age to cave in to peer pressure and become complacent to challenging themselves. The common worry with sending a child to a gifted school is whether or not he or she will be able to retain the perspective inherent in growing up in a more diverse academic environment.

Options for a Gifted Education

Many public schools offer gifted programs within regular class scheduling. This allows students to be able to take more advanced classes while still receiving the public school experience. However, This structure will not necessarily allow your child to realize their full potential. Public school systems often have very high student to teacher ratios, which means that even if they provide unique and fulfilling coursework, the students will not be able to get the one-on-one attention they deserve. Every child is different, and giving them the opportunity to attend a school that addresses the individual needs of gifted students is the best way to maximize your child’s potential.

The Importance of Like-Minded Peers

The classic argument for keeping children in the public school system is that they will lose perspective when surrounded by people just like themselves. While the underlying theme of this sentiment certainly has its merits, the counterargument that children thrive more in an environment with like-minded individuals holds water as well. Since children can easily be swayed by their peers into losing interest in academics, enrolling children in a gifted school will foster an environment of inspiration and challenge for their budding academic careers.

Every child is unique and every family is different, but a special education is one that should at least be considered for academically gifted students.
