There are many different ways that gifted students are taught in schools. While it is easily argued that the quality of the education is very dependent on the actual school one attends, it also is somewhat dependent on the actual design of the gifted program. There are generally three different ways that gifted education is handled. By understanding each of them, parents will find it much easier to decide on where their gifted child should be taught.

In a Regular Classroom

Gifted students are often simply put in the regular classroom to learn alongside their peers without any special accommodations. Often gifted students will be placed in some advanced classes to accommodate their gifted status, but these classes usually also include students who may not be classified as gifted. This is the most common solution in public schools where funding is low and special teachers can not be afforded to provide specific, gifted education.

In a Gifted Classroom

Schools that can afford to put more money into special education programs may be able to offer gifted classrooms for only gifted students. These classrooms often allow students to work more freely with education customized to their individual gifts, talents and skills. This may include private schools and public schools in more affluent areas.

In a Gifted School

There is also the option of a school specifically designed for gifted students. Testing is usually required to gain admission to the school, and the school is usually privately operated. At a gifted school, students are surrounded by gifted students and teachers who have been trained to specifically work in gifted classrooms. The education is more customized and tailored to provide the best learning environment for gifted learners.

Parents who are greatly concerned with their gifted child’s education should consider all three options carefully. While they each have their own pros and cons, when it comes down to it, the ideal situation is the one where your child feels the most confident and is being challenged and taught at their intellectual level.
