When it comes to a child’s education, there is a difference between gifted and bright. A bright child will do fairly well in a regular classroom and can benefit greatly from honors or even Advanced Placement coursework. In order to excel, gifted children on the other hand require specially designed curriculums and a tailored classroom environment.

The Bright Child: An Overview

Does your child fall into the bright category? Look over this list and compare your student’s characteristics:

  • Works hard
  • Top of the class
  • 6-8 repetitions for mastery
  • Satisfied with own learning
  • Knows answers
  • Copies notes accurately

Keep an eye on your child’s behavior and schoolwork for as accurate assessment.

The Gifted Child: General Behavior

A gifted child is capable of intense focus when they are truly interested in a task or concept. They also have tremendous mental energy and may have trouble concentrating in other settings. They often relate better to older individuals and handle abstract concepts well. While other children need intuitive concepts explained, gifted children make the connections themselves and are quickly ready to move on.

The Gifted Child: Learning Demands

Brilliant children easily make intuitive links and are quick to point out inconsistencies. They unconsciously sense the importance of key details and readily identify unstated patterns. In their learning, gifted students go beyond the given curriculum and make broad connections along with new discoveries.

The Gifted Child: Creative Characteristics

This group of children thinks of incredibly imaginative and unconventional ideas and rarely has an issue communicating concept complexity. These children love to fantasize and take great pleasure in intellectual activities. They rarely shy away from complex problems and often surprise their caretakers with an effective and unusual solution.

When you are thinking about whether your child is bright or gifted, ask yourself this question: does your student have special needs? Identifying whether or not your student is gifted will be the next step in the process. If you think your child would benefit from an accelerated curriculum or tailored teacher attention, he or she may be intellectually gifted.
