Keeping Your Child's Mind Active Over Winter Break | Oak Crest Academy

Students can enjoy a break from school and still exercise their minds, bodies and spirits with a variety of activities that can be utilized during winter break. One of the easiest activities for children and parents to do together is reading. Encourage your gifted child to explore different subjects by visiting a library or bookstore and really take the time to discover new authors or styles of writing. Most libraries and bookstores offer programs that are free for families and can include story time, craft activities, and book readings. Parents can set a great example by choosing to read for pleasure and creating a quiet, relaxing atmosphere in the home without the distraction of television, video games, or other screens.

Arts and crafts can be an endless source of learning, creativity, and fun. Inexpensive materials can make for a creative outlet for your child’s active mind. Your child can create something original or follow instructions from a specialty website or crafty design book. Do you have a picky eater? Get your child involved in cooking where they can learn the concepts of measurement, timing, and patience. Children who help prepare family meals are more likely to enjoy the (literal) fruits of their labor!

Museums are not just for adults. Research your city for large art museums or smaller niche places that could include a museum of flight, specific cultures or event in history, regional history, or animals. Decide whether you want your child to experience a guided tour or the ability to enjoy exhibits independently.

To help your gifted child retain academic knowledge over a long winter break from school, invest in some flashcards or math workbooks that align with their school’s curriculum. Make learning fun with a pajama math day or set them up with a “home office” to complete school work in their leisure time.
