Why Parents Seek a Specialized Gifted and Talented School

Why Parents Seek a Specialized Gifted and Talented School | Oak Crest Academy

Public schools are required to offer gifted and talented programs to students who have achieved high scores on their intelligence quotient tests. However, a student will spend a minimal amount of time in tutoring sessions or specialized activities rather than receiving specialized instruction each day. This is why many parents seek a private educational institution for their child. A school for gifted students is able to focus on creating programs for children who learn quickly and require additional mental stimulation. Because all of the students in the school are in the highest range of intelligence the instructors do not need to create lesson plans for other learning styles.

The Traits of a Gifted and Talented Student

Students in gifted and talented programs have these traits:

• Pyschomotor ability
• Visual or performing arts
• High leadership ability
• Productive or creative thinking
• Specific types of academic aptitude
• High general intellectual ability

Gifted and talented schools have smaller class sizes, and teachers frequently have more education than public school teachers do. With a smaller number of students, teachers are able to work together to create individual educational plans for each student that includes targeting their specific skills. In addition, while a gifted student may want to spend the majority of the day learning how to play a musical instrument because that is what they excel at, teachers will make sure that a student also learns other subjects.

Providing Enrichment Activities for the Talented and Gifted

For effective gifted learning to occur, students must also spend time in a variety of settings, including working in small or large groups. Working with groups will teach a gifted student how to socialize with their peers rather than isolating themselves. In a gifted and talented school setting, teachers are able to combine students with different interests and ages in groups to work on specific projects. Gifted students love to learn and may want to spend time in enrichment activities that increase the school day time. A school for the gifted might offer creative writing classes, chess clubs or field trips to museums.
